Sunday Evening Event

Nights of the King's Table

Held the third Sunday of each month from September through March.

This is a Scripture Memory program that features lessons from the book, "The Pastor's Book of Reminders" (PBR) written by Pastor Ted Groves, senior pastor of GCC. The PBR can be used both as a tool for church ministry and as a personal devotional aid.

At Grace Community Church we use the PBR as our resource tool for subject related Scripture promises for use in our Scripture Memory Program. Each year (usually the last Sunday in March) we hold a Scripture Memory Quiz in which various teams from within our church compete for a Scripture Memory Plaque and a free pizza party.

“Teams” are made up of various ministries in our church (such as the Ladies’ Bible Study, the Home School Group, Fellowship groups, and others). We also provide one Sunday night each month (communion Sunday, the last Sunday) for “The ‘Nights’ of the King’s Table.” All those in the church who are interested come to share in an evening of focus on the Scripture Memory Program in the PBR. This evening includes a brief message on the theme for the year and there is a ‘workshop’ time in which we focus together on Scripture memory. We also sing some of the great hymns of the faith and we encourage participants to memorize the words to these great hymns. The Nights of the King’s Table group also provides some of the teams for the Scripture Memory Quiz.

Each year the focus in on one of the sections in the PBR (i.e. “Blue” for the attributes of God; “Gold” for promises related to our membership in the royal family of God; etc.). Each year we also select a specific extended passage of Scripture for the teams to memorize and also one great hymn of the faith.

The annual Scripture Memory Quiz begins early on Sunday Morning (before church) with members of all teams reporting to take (anonymously) a written quiz over the assigned materials which have been worked on all year long. Test scores contribute to the total number of points for the participant’s team. On the evening of that same day, we hold the oral quiz, in which all teams compete for additional points.

As the years go by, members of our congregation who have been faithful and who have participated in this ministry will have rotated through every section of the PBR more than once. This cultivates a solid and rich base of memorized promises as well as some extended passages of Scripture and the words to some of the great hymns of the faith.

All of this helps us fulfill the command in Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

At GCC, we believe that Scripture memory is a vital part of our Christian walk. Everyone, including children are invited and encouraged to participate.
